What I Liked This Year…

Modern Skirts – I got my first listen to this Athens-based band on Paste Magazine Music Sampler #20. Seventeen Dirty Magazines led me to My Lost Soprano and finally the purchase of the entire album. Catalogue of Generous Men has great pop hooks built on a strong piano base and reinforcing harmonies. You can visit their MySpace page to get a sample of their musical magic.

Thumbsucker – I have a soft spot for quirky indie films. Each character in Thumbsucker has their own clear, odd motivation (mom is addicted to the addicted movie star, son is angry and tries various drugs to fix it, dad can’t communicate). You’ll need Netflix or an equivalent to find this one.

Project Blackbox – Sun is developing a datacenter that fits in a standard shipping container.

BLAM – Barenaked Ladies inspired me this year with the release of Barenaked Ladies Are Me. The group wrote 29 new songs to be released in two “albums”. The first came out in September, released under BNL’s own label in a variety of formats and renditions. With the rights held by the group, more innovative methods of packaging and distribution were possible. Oh, the music is pretty good too. Sound of Your Voice is probably my favorite.

Battlestar Galactica – The television series continues to provide a stark reflection of the world we live in. This season the show has explored suicide bombing, torture, vigilante justice, and forced species extinction. To keep up, you’ll need to move with it to Sundays in January.

My two favorite pieces of business writing this year were The Risk Pool by Malcolm Gladwell and How Many Lightbulbs Does It Take To Change The World? One. And You’re Looking At It. by Charles Fishman. Both are about the past, the future, and how actions can be taken now to deal with both.

“Here Something I Got For You…”

No, it is not a C++ GUI programming guide.

For Mac users out there, check out MacSanta. Twenty-one software companies are having a Christmas Sale. When you use the coupon code MACSANTA, you get 20% off the standard price. The offer is good until 12/25/06. I use FlySketch and VoodooPad. My early holiday gifts look like they will be Fission and PackRat.

NetNewsWire (the best RSS reader for the Mac) is also available for 30% the normal price. Use NGHoliday when you check out and get $10 off.

I’ve been tagged…

My dear friend Andrea has drawn me into this little game of tag.

I now have you tell you five things that you didn’t know about me:

  • When I was 13, I had to have brain surgery to remove an infection that started with a freak water skiing accident. I spent three months in the hospital recovering.
  • I was kicked out of the band in 8th grade for playing too loud and talking back to the teacher. I was heavily recruited for the high school band (can you believe that?), joined on a fluke, and played all the way through college; serving as student director for my last two years.
  • Just as our GE careers were starting to take off, my wife and I quit our jobs and travelled for a year – first to Australia and New Zealand, and then three months around the US. It is #4 on the life highlight reel after my marriage and births of our two children.
  • Products I manufactured during my operations career – Ziploc Bags, industrial diamond, motor control systems for steel/paper mills, reverse osmosis water filters, transformer enclosures, and PET scanners.
  • My favorite holiday is Groundhog’s Day. It is so pagan. We still worship of a large rat to see if we are going to get more snow.

So, now I need to pull five more people into this:

  • Jory Des Jardins – she tells great stories, just go read her More Space essay.
  • Bob Sutton – he often blamed me for getting him into blogging; I think this a great way to get him a little deeper into the blogging community.
  • Rob May – I still feel like Rob and I were pioneers in the business blogging community.
  • Steve Farber – Mr. Farber is also relatively new to blogging. I hope he can share some great stories under his banner of Extreme Leadership.
  • Tom Ehrenfeld – Tom and I share a passion for business books. I have always wished he would blog more. Here is a little nudge.

Lost Recordings of Wilmot High School Pep Band

My mother will periodically bring me things she has found from leftover from my childhood.  The latest is a true treasure.  She found an LP with recordings of my high school pep band.  I couldn’t find a year anywhere on the package, but I fairly certain it was put together in 1987, my sophmore year.  You will find me listed as a member the trombone section.  I played baritone and valve trombone through high school and college.

For your listening pleasure, I had the recordings converted to mp3s (thanks, Dylan).
