NBC’s The Office or The Importance of Telling a Good Story

I think telling good story is hard. Robots was bad because it was a poorly told story.

NBC’s version of The Office I think is going to have the same problems. It was really hard to watch tonight. I know part of it is because I just got done watching the original. They are using alot of the material from the BBC version.

I really didn’t laugh. As I was watching, I kept thinking there was no appreciation for timing of the jokes. The mock-doc is too produced. Too many tight shots were you miss how the other characters are reacting. They left no time for the romance to develop between Tim and Dawn. I seem to remember the first episode was pretty much David and in the new show they are too concerned about involving the whole cast right away.

Just watch this clip. You’ll know why the original is brilliant.

I beg you to watch the original before you get turned off to the whole thing. I don’t want you to say to yourself, “I don’t know why everyone thinks this is so funny.”

Enough said.

  1. I fully agree with you!

When I watched The Office (DVD’s) I loved it, laughed so much, LOVED adored and felt Tim and Dawn… this one? *sigh*

  2. If you are American then don’t spoil the American series by watching the British one, at least not yet! I am British and I am still enjoying the US program now that more original materiel is being used. Good luck to NBC. Remember – the UK series barely got a mention till they actually re-ran the series a second time!

  3. I’m a huge fan of the original BBC version, and I have to say the American version works for me. Each week the episodes become a little more original and I think NBC actually did a British import right this time.

  4. With so many people out there badmouthing what I perceive to be the funniest thing on television, I am kind of reminded of the best book I’ve ever read, “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. This is a fine show, the finest to come along in a long while, and there exists this contingency who want to bring it down. NBC’s version of the office is the best thing to happen to TV since “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Seinfeld”. It is just brilliant. I have never laughed so hard in my life at some of the bits I’ve witnessed so far, and the show is still in its infancy. And yet, there are those out there who would love nothing better than to see this show’s demise, and for what? Because it based on a BBC show? I make a vow now to never watch the BBC version, just because of these narrow-minded simpletons who trash something simply for the reason that it couldn’t possibly be any good. Well, the show is good, and despite all of the efforts to sabotage it, I think it will survive and flourish.

  5. I agree with Blake W. completely. I have not seen the BBC version and don’t want to. I think this is the funniest thing I have seen on television lately, and I have this really sad feeling that people who don’t like it either a)just don’t get it, or b) want it to be the BBC version (and if that is what they want, they should just watch the BBC version!) I am just hoping that enough people will enjoy the same type of humor I do, and that this show will get another season to survice and flourish.
